Building on its established role as the Galileo Services Provider, EUSPA has now taken on the responsibility of being the EGNOS Data Access Service (EDAS) Provider, centralising key services and enhancing user experience across multiple domains.
EUSPA expands its role as EGNOS EDAS Provider
The European Union Agency for the Space Programme (EUSPA) continues strengthening its position as a cornerstone of Europe’s space infrastructure, evolving its capabilities to support an expanding range of services within the European Global Navigation Satellite System (EGNSS).
Building on its established role as the Galileo Services Provider, EUSPA has now taken on the responsibility of being the EGNOS Data Access Service (EDAS) Provider, centralising key services and enhancing user experience across multiple domains.
A Unified Approach to E-GNSS Services
Following the trajectory set by initiatives like the EGNOS Safety of Life (SoL) assisted service for Maritime Users (ESMAS), EUSPA keeps streamlining the provision of E-GNSS services under one umbrella by including the EDAS Service. This centralised approach ensures a harmonised evolution and brings additional value to users across various sectors. By taking over EDAS service provision, EUSPA establishes a single point of contact for users, integrating ESMAS and EDAS helpdesk support and access through a unified portal.
We have released a new Service Definition Document (SDD) that outlines the features, capabilities, and service levels of EDAS. This updated document will provide users with a clear understanding of EUSPA’s expanded role and the benefits of the new management framework.
The Role of EDAS in the EGNOS Ecosystem
The EGNOS Data Access Service (EDAS) has been an integral part of the EGNOS Services portfolio since 2012, offering ground-based access to EGNOS data via Internet on a controlled access basis. EDAS enables access to the EGNOS data complementary to the EGNOS SiS, supporting precise navigation and positioning, allowing a wide range of applications, particularly in mapping, surveying, agriculture, transport applications and R&D sectors. Now, with EUSPA fully accountable for EDAS service provision, users benefit from consistent, reliable service delivery and simplified interactions through increasingly centralised support interfaces.
EUSPA's Operational Evolution
EUSPA continues to evolve as an Operational Agency, adapting to the growing portfolio of the EU Space Programme and its anticipated future developments. The agency’s expanded scope includes managing a comprehensive suite of services that enhance Europe’s navigation, communication, and Earth observation capabilities.
By integrating its role as EDAS provider and building on its Galileo and EGNOS legacy, EUSPA ensures the EU remains at the forefront of satellite navigation technology. This approach underscores the agency's commitment to innovation, user-centric services, and fostering synergies across the space ecosystem.
By streamlining access to critical navigation data and ensuring seamless support for maritime and other users, EUSPA is paving the way for enhanced operational efficiency and increased value to end-users. As the agency continues to grow its portfolio, the integration of EGNOS and Galileo services under a single operational framework demonstrates its capability to support Europe’s strategic goals in space and beyond.
"With EDAS being fully under EUSPA responsibility, EUSPA solidifies its role as a pivotal entity unveiling synergies and optimizing the use of the European Union’s space infrastructure. This unified approach enhances user experience and operational efficiency across various sectors. It is another step to ensure EGNOS and Galileo services continue to evolve and support the European Union's strategic space objectives," said da Costa, EUSPA Executive Director.
